WhatsApp Template Rejected? How to Fix It

How Meta Reviews a Template

Every template goes through an automated review and sometimes a human one. Meta rejects a template when it breaks a rule, and it tells you why in a short code. The code is not always friendly, so the first job is to turn it into an action.

The rules are Meta's, not ours, and they apply whatever platform you use. How a platform charges you for the template is a separate question, which the comparison page covers.

What Each Rejection Code Means

Meta reports a reason code with the rejection. These are the ones we see, in plain words:

  • ABUSIVE_CONTENT: the copy breaks Meta's rules on abuse. Reword it and submit again.
  • INVALID_FORMAT: the format is wrong. Check the variables, the sample values and the formatting markers.
  • PROMOTIONAL: the message reads like an offer but sits in a category that does not allow it. Move it to Marketing, or rewrite it as a utility message.
  • TAG_CONTENT_MISMATCH: the content does not match the category you chose.
  • SCAM: the message looks like a scam, usually because it asks for money, codes or personal details.

If Meta gives no reason at all, check the template in WhatsApp Manager, or edit it and submit again.

Fix It in Five Steps

  1. Open the template and read the rejection reason in plain words on its detail page.
  2. Compare the category to the content. Order updates are Utility. Offers are Marketing. Codes are Authentication.
  3. Check every variable. Number them {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}} with no gaps, and give each one a real sample value.
  4. Read the copy like Meta would. Remove anything that promises money, asks for an OTP, or sounds like a prize.
  5. Edit and submit again. You do not need to create a new template.

The Category Is the Usual Culprit

Most rejections we see are a category mismatch, not bad writing. A message that says "20% off this weekend" is a Marketing template, even if you send it to people who ordered last month. A message that says "Your order has shipped" is Utility, even if you would like to add an offer line to it.

Meta reads the content, not your intention. Put promotional lines in promotional templates.

Variables and Sample Values

Meta requires one sample value for every variable, because a reviewer needs to see what the message will look like. A template with {{1}} and {{2}} needs two samples. A template that starts or ends with a variable, or puts two variables side by side, is usually rejected as INVALID_FORMAT.

Keep the samples realistic. "{{1}}", "asdf" and "test" all hurt you.

A Before and After

Before, rejected as PROMOTIONAL inside Utility:

"Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} has shipped. Use code SAVE20 for 20% off your next order."

After, split into two templates that pass:

Utility: "Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} has shipped and will arrive soon."

Marketing: "Hi {{1}}, this weekend only: 20% off with code SAVE20."

The order update informs. The offer sells. Meta treats them differently, so keep them apart.

Rewriting Copy Meta Accepts

The rewrites that pass are usually shorter and more specific. Compare:

Rejected: "URGENT! Your account will be blocked. Verify now to keep using WhatsApp."

Accepted as Utility: "Your verification code is {{1}}. Do not share it with anyone."

The first asks for action under threat and reads like phishing. The second states a fact. Meta approves facts and rejects pressure.

Three edits that fix most copy:

  1. Remove any claim that something bad will happen if the customer does not act.
  2. Remove requests for a code, a password or a payment.
  3. Replace vague urgency with a concrete detail: an order number, an appointment time, an amount.

A Second Example: Authentication Templates

Authentication templates are the strictest, because Meta controls the body. You choose only two things: whether to add a security recommendation line, and how long the code stays valid. A custom body under the Authentication category is rejected, and the reason usually reads as INVALID_FORMAT or "invalid parameter".

If you want your own wording around a code, that is a Utility template, and it must not look like it is collecting a credential.

Keep the Rejected Template

Do not delete a rejected template while you fix it. Two reasons: the rejection reason stays visible on its detail page, so you can compare before and after, and the name stays reserved at Meta for a while after deletion, so recreating it is not instant.

Edit the template, submit again, and keep the old copy as a reference until the new one is approved.

What the Codes Are Not

The code is not a judgement on the value of your business and it is not final. Almost every rejected template can be fixed with an edit, and none of them cost anything to resubmit. Treat the reason as a checklist item, not a verdict.

Formatting and Buttons

Bold uses asterisks, italics use _underscores_, and a link goes in a URL button, not in the body as a bare address. A body that ends with a raw link is a common INVALID_FORMAT rejection. Move the link into a button and keep the body clean.

The message with buttons is a separate template type. If you switch a template to add buttons, the builder changes the type for you.

When a Template Keeps Getting Rejected

If the same template is rejected twice with the same reason, do not resubmit it unchanged a third time. Change the thing the reason names. If it is PROMOTIONAL, change the category. If it is INVALID_FORMAT, rebuild the variables. If it is SCAM, remove the request for money or a code.

If you believe the rejection is wrong, Meta's own documentation at https://developers.facebook.com/docs/whatsapp is the place to check the current rules. Keep a copy of the rejected template so you can compare.

What This Costs You

A rejected template costs nothing but time. Nothing is charged until a message is sent. Once it is approved, a marketing template in India costs ₹0.86 at Meta's rate plus our ₹0.20 platform fee. The pricing page has the full table.

Frequently Asked Questions

### How long does Meta take to review a template?

Usually minutes, occasionally up to about 24 hours. The status updates on its own, so you do not need to check manually.

### Can I edit a rejected template?

Yes. A rejected template can be edited and submitted again. An approved one cannot be edited in place, so edit it as a new version instead.

### Does resubmitting cost anything?

No. Review is free. You pay only when a message is actually sent.
