How to Get the WhatsApp Business API in India
What You Are Actually Getting
The WhatsApp Business API is not an app you download. It is an account structure at Meta plus software that talks to it. Getting it in India means three things: a Meta Business portfolio, a verified business, and a phone number that is not already on WhatsApp.
None of it is hard. It is just sequential, and each step has a rule that stops you if you skip it.
Step 1: Create a Meta Business Portfolio
Go to business.facebook.com and create a portfolio if you do not have one. Use the legal name of your business, the same name that appears on your GST certificate or company registration. This portfolio owns the WhatsApp Business Account, the phone number and the payment method.
Step 2: Verify Your Business
Meta asks for proof that the business exists. In India that usually means a certificate of incorporation or a GST certificate, plus a matching name. Verification can take a day or a few days. You can start connecting a number before verification finishes, but the account stays limited until it is done.
Step 3: Prepare a Number That Is Not on WhatsApp
This is the step that catches people. A number registered on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app must be deleted from the app first. Deleting the WhatsApp account does not delete your chat history, but it does take that number off the app.
You can use a fresh number instead, including a landline that can receive an SMS or a call for the one-time code. Virtual numbers work only if they can receive that code.
Step 4: Set the Display Name
The display name is the name customers see at the top of the chat. Meta reviews it. A display name must relate to your business and must not impersonate another brand. Names like "Best Deals India" get rejected; "Sharma Textiles" passes.
Step 5: Connect Through Wassapp
Open your dashboard and start the Connect WhatsApp step. Our button opens Meta's Embedded Signup. You log in to the Meta portfolio, grant the permissions Wassapp asks for, choose the WhatsApp Business Account and the number, and confirm.
Meta hands the number back to us and the checklist shows the connection as done. If you already have a WhatsApp Business Account with another provider, you can select it instead of creating a new one.
Step 6: Add a Payment Method in Meta
Meta bills its own per-message charges to a payment method on the Meta portfolio, not to us. Add a card or your approved billing method in Meta Business settings. Your prepaid wallet with us is separate and only covers our platform fee.
Step 7: Import Contacts and Send
Import a CSV on the Contacts page, get a template approved, and send a campaign. The first campaign guide covers those three steps in detail.
What Meta Asks at Verification
Meta wants to see that the business is real and that the person connecting it represents it. The document list changes, so check Meta's own guide, but the shape is stable: a registration or tax document, a matching business name, and a website or an email on the business domain that mentions the business.
Have the document ready as a clear photo or PDF before you start. A blurry upload is a common reason for a slow review, and a mismatch between the portfolio name and the document is the other.
What Usually Goes Wrong
- The number is still on the WhatsApp app. Delete it from the app first, then connect.
- The business name on the portfolio does not match the verification document. Fix the name before you start.
- The display name reads like a slogan. Keep it to the trading name.
- The Meta payment method is missing, so messages fail at Meta even though they left our system.
- Two people verify the same portfolio with different documents. Work from one set of documents.
A Checklist Before You Start
Have these ready before you open anything:
- The legal name of the business and a matching verification document.
- A phone number that is free of the WhatsApp app, and a way to receive a code on it.
- Access to the Meta Business portfolio, either as an admin or with someone who is.
- A card or billing method for Meta's own per-message charges.
- One person to own the connection, so two people are not half-connecting the same portfolio.
After You Are Connected
Once the number is live, three things are worth doing before your first big send:
- Add the Meta payment method, or messages will fail at Meta even though everything looks fine here.
- Write and submit two templates, one Utility and one Marketing, so you have both ready.
- Import contacts and tag them, so your first campaign targets the people who actually opted in.
Then send a small campaign to yourself first. Watching your own number receive the message catches most copy mistakes before a customer sees them.
What It Costs
There is nothing to pay to get connected. Meta charges per message once you send. In India a marketing template costs ₹0.86 at Meta's rate, utility and authentication templates cost ₹0.12, and our platform fee is ₹0.20 per template message sent from a campaign. The pricing page shows both parts and a calculator.
When This Is Not for You
If you send a handful of messages a day and answer them yourself, the free WhatsApp Business app does the same work without any of these steps. The API is worth the setup when you have a team, a contact list or something you want to automate. Our comparison of the API and the app goes through that decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
### Can I keep using my current WhatsApp number?
Yes, if you remove it from the WhatsApp app first. Deleting the app account frees the number for the API.
### Do I need a GST number to get the API?
No. Meta asks for a business verification document, which can be a certificate of incorporation or another accepted proof. A GST certificate is one option, not the only one.
### How long does the whole process take?
The connection itself takes minutes. Business verification is the slow part and can take a day or a few days. You can prepare the number and templates while you wait.
Read Meta's own guide at https://developers.facebook.com/docs/whatsapp for the current document list, because Meta changes it from time to time.
